Lent 2013 – day 18

2 Mar

Was a bit hard to get around to doing this today. A wise man once told me it takes 6 weeks to break or make a habit, clearly for me the struggle to maintain one kicks in at 2 and a half weeks!

Psalm 139:11-12
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Ever noticed how we, as humans, are so often drawn to darkness? So often we hear about crime that either happens at night or in the shadows where sunlight can’t reach. We see in films and on TV that the more “moody” and interesting scenes tend to happen in the dark. We create fiction that lives in the dark, like vampires that can’t come out into sunlight. Although we are called to be “children of light” (Ephesians 5:8) we are so often drawn to the dark, and for any who have been walking in pitch black you will know that if there is no light then there is no way to see where you are or where you are going.

But God sent Jesus, the Light of the World. And, just as Jesus explained about His parables, the darkness cannot understand the Light (John 1:5). But neither can it stop the Light from shining. So even if we do find ourselves lost in the dark, we know that there is a light, THE Light, shining for all the world to see.

We might dabble in the darkness, there’s a lot of it a around in the world, but the darkness can never be truly pitch black anymore. Jesus, the Light of the World, stepped down into darkness so that we could have our eyes open to the Truth.

Search me, God, and know my heart;test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me,and lead me in the way everlasting.
