Lent 2013 – day 20

Psalm 139:17-18
How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.

Anyone ever wondered about the mind of God? And by wondered I don’t mean being caught up in wonder but actually pondered what goes on inside.
Paul asks this question in Romans 11 verse 34:
“Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counsellor?”

Paul is following the same line as David, particularly in the verse before (v33), he is declaring that God’s mind is amazing. But why do we think this? Sure, God’s mind is beyond understanding in terms of both it’s complexity and depth, but what about some of it’s content?

This web page has a large number of things that God thinks about us. I want to highlight 3 of them.

We are His friends (John 15:15)
Jesus called His disciples friends rather than servants because He did not keep from them what the Father was doing. The same is true for us. We are included in the Father’s business and the call of Matthew 28 is that we carry on working for Him, with Him.

We are children of God (John 1:12)
If we believe in the name of Jesus as our Saviour and the only way to the Father, we become children of the Father. Not because we are born like that, but because we are reborn through Christ on the Cross.

We are heirs of God (Romans 8:17)
Because we are children of God, we are His inheritors. Indeed, we are co-heirs with Christ! We inherit both His sufferings and His glory.

3 things that are just a sample of God’s thoughts about us. Is it any wonder that David called them precious?

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
