Lent 2013 – day 32

16 Mar

Psalm 139:11-12
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Why would David be thinking that the darkness might hide him? What does he mean by “darkness? As a former shepherd (maybe even a shepherd at time he wrote this) he would know that the night was not always dark, as the moon and stars would light up the pastures he took his flocks.

The Voice translation if verse 11 offers some light, if you’ll pardon the pun, on things:
Even if I am afraid and think to myself, “There is no doubt that the darkness will swallow me, the light around me will soon be turned to night,”

I think David is talking about the darkness in the world around him. We see in verses 19-22 he talks about “wicked” and “bloodthirsty men” who he speaks of as God’s enemies. Perhaps he was afraid of being caught up in the sin of the world?

It can be very easy to get caught up in what the world is doing. The world can have lots of things that are enticing to join in with or get accidentally caught up in. It can sometimes also seem like the world has got it right and we are “behind the times”. Whilst this can sometimes be the case with the Church, God and His Word is the same yesterday, today and forever and remains true throughout. God’s way is always the right way and always trumps the way of the world. We need to pray for the strength to carry on God’s path for our lives, particularly now as the world and God’s way seem to be moving further and further apart.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
