Youthwork Conference 2014 #YC14 – Saturday Seminar 4

15 Nov

This seminar is Taboo: theology of evangelism by Andy du Feu.

Andy starts by talking about evangelism, telling us that evangelism is sharing what you are passionate about with other people.
He then asks us “What is the good news?”
Good news was what was used to describe the birth of a new Imperial child. “Good” doesn’t really cut it. Jesus is more than just good.
When Jesus came He said that He had come to preach “good news to the poor” and then tells us that, as God had sent Him so He now sends us.
Predestination – you will never know if the person you are talking to has been predestined or not!
Acts 29 – the way that the early Church did things. Important to us because we are an extension of the early Church!
Matt 28, Acts 1 and Luke 24 – we exist to go!
The story of Acts is the Church going to the world.
The Epistles talk about who God is.
When the power comes, go!
The 12 didn’t go when the Spirit came. So the Spirit moved with others.
When we go we are called to go to our home town (Judea), to the areas where we may not feel welcome (Samaria) and to all nations (the ends of the earth).
Paul tells Timothy that in everything that he does he must do the job of an evangelist.
Attractional ministry (Duffy Robins funnel model)
Method can lead to faith becoming private, rather than being lived in public.
Evangelism isn’t for the spiritually mature, but for the spiritually alive!
Funnel can lead to a lack of risk-taking. Jesus took risks when He sent the disciples out. Sometimes we need to just let the young people go and do it with no preparation.
Processed evangelism can lead to us abdicating our responsibility.
Incarnational youth ministry.
Incarnational is only good if it’s used to spread the Gospel.
Without actions no one listens. Without words no one understands!
The Gospel is mission’s DNA!
Confrontational ministry – you can convince people of the Gospel!
Numbers matter to God because numbers are people! God wants people to come to faith and relationship with Him!
The Great Commission demands growth!
Authentic evangelism brings the content.

I may not have got everything down, as I think I may have dozed for the last 10-15 mins!
